LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After being systematically dismantled by No. 10 Concordia University in the first set, No. 3 Biola battled back to dominate in the final three sets, winning 14-25, 25-20, 25-15 and 25-19 in a huge GSAC match on Saturday night at Chase Gymnasium.
The victory stretches Biola winning streak to 11 with the victory and improves to 20-4 on the season and 11-1 in GSAC play. Concordia drops to 16-5 and to 7-5 in the conference.
Sophomore
Nicolette Mather had another spectacular home match, recording 14 kills and hitting .407 to pace Biola's offense. Senior
Tavea Hampton added 13 kills and a pair of blocks while fellow senior
Amy Mosebar had 12 kills with no errors.
Biola posted its best attack percentage in 12 GSAC matches this season, hitting .306 in the match. Concordia managed to snap Biola's 10-match streak of holding opponents under .200 by hitting .266 overall.
The match started out in favor of Concordia which came out strong, completely dominating Biola in the first set. The visitors jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead and built the lead to as many as 12 later in the set. Concordia seemed unstoppable, recording 14 kills in 28 swings and digging everything in sight.
The momentum carried over early into the second set as it looked like it would be a quick loss for Biola. However, Concordia scored five of the first six points and held a 9-4 lead before Biola came alive. Aided by a raucous home crowd, Biola quickly tied the score at 10-10 with a short 6-1 run. Mosebar, who had six kills in nine swings in the second set, picked up back-to-back kills to break an 11-11 tie a short time later and key another 6-1 run to put Biola on top 17-12.
Concordia would narrow the gap to one at 20-19, but Biola answered back with a three-point run with Hampton recording kills for two of them. Mosebar would get a kill to give Biola set point and a big block by
Christine Douglas and
Rachel Buckley tied the match at 1-1.
Biola rode that momentum into the third set and quickly turned the tables on Concordia with an 8-3 opening run. Concordia would get no closer than three the rest of the way, narrowing the gap to four at 17-13 at one point late. However, Biola would respond with an 8-2 run to put the set away in dominating fashion.
The fourth set started out close as the teams battled back-and-forth as there were seven ties and lead changes early on. Trailing 12-11, Biola used a quick three-point run to go up 15-12, accounting for the last lead change. Concordia closed to within one at 15-14 a few points later, but Biola answered right back with a 6-2 run to seal things up. The teams exchanged points the rest of the way with an attack error by Concordia giving Biola the match.
Biola did a great job defending against Concordia All-American Amber Ridens, who had a match-high 24 kills but hit just .284 with five errors in 67 attacks. She had six kills in the first set, but had only eight kills in 29 swings over the next two. Running out of options, Ridens was set 23 times in the fourth set and had 10 of the team's 15 kills.
Brooke Marino added 11 kills and a pair of blocks for Concordia.
Junior
Christian Woodruff had a fantastic match in the back row for Biola, recording 16 digs including a pair of spectacular ones off Ridens to key points in the third set. She added one kill and one ace as well.
The victory gives Biola a season sweep over Concordia for the first time in seven seasons and three-straight wins in the series. Concordia had won 10 of the last 12 matches prior to that streak.
The win also sets up a huge GSAC and NAIA showdown on Tuesday as the Eagles travel up to face No. 1 Fresno Pacific at 7:00 p.m. The Sunbirds picked up their 61st consecutive win on Saturday and have not lost a home conference match since the 2000 season.
