BOX SCORE
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola received goals from four different players and another solid start in goal by netminder
Aaron Fenlason en route to a 4-0 non-conference win over cross-town foe Whittier College on Monday night at Al Barbour Field.
The victory moves the Eagles to 4-0-0 to start the season and establishes a school record for consecutive shutouts to open the season. The previous record came last season when Biola opened the season with three-straight cleansheets before surrendering a goal in the 79th minute at Soka University. (Soka is coincidentally Biola's next opponent.)
The majority of the credit goes to Fenlason, who has kept the Biola goal empty through the first 360 minutes of the season. The sophomore was named GSAC Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the day.
The Eagles dominated the game from start to finish, outshooting the Poets (1-1-0) 25-3 in the contest. However, they were not able to get on the board until the 25th minute. Sophomore
Abraham Gomez sent a free kick into the box where it found the head of fellow sophomore
Marco Ruvalcaba. Ruvalcaba's header went right at the Whittier netminder, but somehow managed to squirt through his legs and into the goal. The tally was the third of the season for Ruvalcaba, temporarily tying him for the team lead.
After the half, Biola came out quickly and scored its second goal of the contest just 35 seconds in. Freshman defender
Colby Roberts sprinted down the right side and sent a nice cross into the box. Junior
Kennedy Chongo then out-jumped the final defender and headed the ball past the keeper and into the goal. The tally gave Chongo the team scoring lead back with his fourth goal of the season.
The Eagles added their third goal of the contest in the 59th minute as
Jared Fenlason collected his first goal of the season, heading in a corner kick from
Tony Montalvo.
Biola capped the scoring in the 82nd minute as
Humberto Toscan took advantage of a wide open goal after the keeper tried in vain to chase down a loose ball near the corner. Toscan collected the pass and sent in a nice shot from 20 yards out over the heads of two Whittier defenders for his second goal of the season.
Whittier's best chance of the game came in the first half when a bad pass by the Biola defense moved right out in front of the box and was crushed just high by DJ Covarrubias.
The Eagles are off to their best offensive start since the 1979 season when they also scored 18 goals through the first four games of the season. The overall record is 32 goals scored in four games by the 1970 team.
Biola enjoys a much-needed break, returning to action on Friday, Sept. 18, for a non-conference home game against Soka University from Aliso Viejo. That game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
