BOX SCORE
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola continued its stellar start to the 2009 season with a 5-0, non-conference victory over Trinity International University (Ill.) in its home-opener on Friday night at Al Barbour Field.
Sophomore midfielder
Zach Bautista scored twice in the first half and brothers
Derek Friehe and
Phillip Friehe each netted a goal in the second half as the Eagles cruised to their third-straight victory to open the season.
The Eagles peppered Trinity goalkeeper Karl Lindbald early on before finally breaking through in the ninth minute. Senior defender
Shalom Bako gave a low lining cross from the top corner of the goal box to set up a header from Bautista right in front of the goal to open up the scoring.
Biola picked up the aggression as, in the 20th minute, junior midfielder Jake Ravenscraft found Bautista streaking down the middle. The sophomore then blasted the ball past Lindbald for his second score of the game.
The Eagles continued to keep the ball in the attacking half for the better part of the first half, outshooting Trinity seven to three in the first.
In the 42nd minute, freshman forward
Aaron Engel advanced the ball into the middle of the field before finding forward
Marco Ruvalcaba to dish the ball to. Ruvalcaba, from the left corner of the box, froze the defender with a hesitation step and subsequently lined a shot with his right foot into the right corner of the goal.
Biola tacked on a pair of goals in the second half thanks to the offense from the Friehe brothers.
In the 79th minute, Biola attacked down the left side of the field and worked the ball to Ruvalcaba who quickly for
Derek Friehe all alone at the top of the box. After checking to make sure he was alone, the elder Friehe ripped a shot to the far right of Lindbald for the goal.
Younger brother Phillip then checked in for Derek and nine minutes later scored as well.
Joshua-Paul Robles dribbled to his right and left the ball for Phillip who capped off the game with the Eagle's fifth goal.
Netminder
Aaron Fenlason was sharp in goal, facing six shots and making a pair of saves to run his season-opening scoreless streak to 270 minutes.
Biola has now outscored its opponents 14-0 in its first three games, its most prolific start to the season in school history.
The Eagles also continued their success in home openers. Biola is now 30-16-4 all-time in home openers and 7-0-1 over the last eight seasons.
The Eagles look to keep the momentum going on Monday (Sept. 7) with a non-conference, Labor Day battle against cross-town foe Whittier College. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. on Al Barbour Field.
