BOX SCORE
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior midfielder
Ashley Moseley and junior forward
Sam David scored goals over a 46-second span in the first half as Biola cruised to an easy 5-0 win over Holy Names University in a non-conference game on Thursday night at Al Barbour Field.
The victory is the Eagles second-straight home win and improves their record to 2-0-1 on the season. The Hawks fall to 1-2-0 overall.
David finished the contest with a goal and two assists to pace the Biola offense, which scored the most goals in a game since the 2004 season.
Biola opened the scoring in the ninth minute, as junior defender
Amy Atkinson launched a ball into the box that was perfectly headed by David to the feet of an open Moseley. The senior then beat the keeper with a quick low shot to give the Eagles the early advantage.
The Eagles wasted little time building on the lead as a Holy Names turnover deep in its offensive zone gave Biola the ball less than thirty seconds later. Moseley then returned the favor with a nifty pass through a pair of defenders to an open David, who scored a nearly identical goal as Moseley to double the lead.
The score remained 2-0 until the half and well into the second until the 58th minute, when senior midfielder
Nikki Mathis found junior forward
Brittany Barr off a free kick in the box. Barr headed it to the right of Holy Names' keeper for her first collegiate goal and extended the lead to three.
In the 73rd minute, David once again was on the attack and dished the ball to the outside, to junior
Zoe Zappas, who ripped a blast into the left corner of the goal from about 20 yards out.
Senior forward
Megan Gularte teamed up with Mathis to cap the scoring in the 79th minute. Gularte received a pass in the box and led Mathis with a nice pass. The senior then finished with a quick touch for her first goal of the season.
Biola netminder
Erin Frushon continued her red-hot play, facing seven shots and making two saves to earn her second-straight cleansheet. Frushon was strong in net and made a few impressive plays coming off her line to thwart scoring chances by the Hawks. Early in the second half, Frushon came out of her goal and made a great sliding stop after a Holy Names forward broke past the final line of defense.
The five goals scored were the most by the Eagles since a 5-0 drubbing of Auburn-Montgomery in the second round of the NAIA tournament on November 19, 2004. Biola has now scored nine goals in three matches this season after scoring just 14 in the entire 2008 campaign.
The Eagles have a bit of a break, returning to action on Friday, Sept. 18, hosting Soka University from Aliso Viejo at 4:30 p.m. on Al Barbour Field.
