HAYWARD, Calif. --- After a pair of impressive preseason showings against two tough NCAA Division II schools, Biola opened the regular season against yet another DII school and kept up its strong play, defeating Cal State East Bay 5-0 in a non-conference match on Monday afternoon.

The Eagles (1-0) had five different players score goals and outshot the Pioneers 17-8 overall in the contest.

Junior Jake Ravenscraft got Biola on the board early, finishing a one-on-one chance in the seventh minute. Ravenscraft received a nice through ball from senior Derek Friehe and finished with ease past the Cal State East Bay netminder.

Sophomore forward Marco Ruvalcaba gave the Eagles their second goal just eight minutes later on a nearly identical play. This time it was senior Shalom Bako sending a quick pass up ahead right onto the foot of Ruvalcaba. The sophomore had already beat the Pioneer back line and tucked the shot in past the keeper to make it 2-0.

Biola scored its third goal in the 23rd minute as junior Kennedy Chongo sent a quick shot into traffic in front of the net. The ball ricocheted off a player in front and settled in the back of the net.

The Eagles closed out the first half with their fourth goal of the contest thanks to sophomore newcomer Graham Foster. Foster, a transfer from Philadelphia Biblical University, scored his first Biola goal and first overall since 2007 by winning a scramble in front of the net off a corner kick in the 43rd minute.

Junior Philip Friehe wrapped up the scoring in the 54th minute, finishing off a great feed by Humberto Toscan to put Biola in front by a 5-0 count.

Sophomore netminder Aaron Fenlason picked up the victory and his first cleansheet of the season, facing just eight shots and making one save.

The Eagles return to the Bay area on Saturday, taking on UC Santa Cruz in an exhibition match at 4:00 p.m. Biola opens the home portion of its schedule on Friday, Sept. 4, hosting Trinity International University (Ill.) at 7:00 p.m. on Al Barbour Field.
