Biola Stifles Westmont 6-1

Fayard's second inning double proved to be all the scoring Biola would need.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- As the Biola Eagles wrap up the final weeks of the regular season, they now have a model for the baseball they want to play.

Biola (27-18, 18-11 GSAC) tallied six runs on nine hits  and rode a solid start from Calen Pennington to beat the Westmont Warriors(12-29, 8-22 GSAC) 6-1 on Thursday at  Westmont.

Seniors Chad Pace and Hawkins Gebbers each homered giving Biola eight home runs in a two game sweep of Westmont.

Biola jumped out with a four run second as Gebbers reached on an error to start the inning before Taylor Loop singled. Freshman Vinnie Fayard delivered a two-run double to put the Eagles in front. Pace then unloaded on a 0-1 pitch to double the Biola lead. For Pace, it was his third home run in two days giving him five on the year.

Gebbers' shot came in the third with nobody on and the blast was his team leading 10th of 2009.

Biola tacked on what turned out to be the final run of the ball game in the fourth as Brent Opdyke, Fayard, and Daniel Bodemer all singled before Chris Foreman forced home a run on a fielder's choice.

Pennington already had the game under his control as he scattered five hits and two walks through six to earn his second win of the year, now 2-3.

The Eagles went to senior Brian Albert in the seventh to shut the door. Albert was fantastic, spreading four hits over three innings to pick up his first save.

The win gives the Eagles a 3-1 series victory over the Warriors.

Biola turns its attention to Concordia on Saturday )Apr. 18) for a GSAC doubleheader beginning at Noon at the Eagles Diamond in La Mirada.
