BOX SCORE
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Junior Mike Frisina allowed just five hits over seven scoreless inning while Chris Foreman went 3-for-5 to pace Biola to a 6-2 non-conference win over Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday afternoon at Eagles Diamond.
The Eagles improve to 23-18 on the season with their ninth win in their last 13 games. The Coyotes fall to 18-18 on the heels of their second-straight loss.
Frisina was outstanding in his fifth start of the year, scattering five hits and striking out five to improve to 3-0 on the season. He did not allow a baserunner past second base and retired the final eight batters he faced.
The Eagles gave him some run support early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Foreman led things off with a single, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. He followed that by stealing third and--after a walk to Billy Vopinek--came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Loop.
But Biola wasn't finished in the inning as Hawkins Gebbers picked up his ninth home run of the season with a two-run blast to left field to put the Eagles up 3-0.
Biola would add two more in the third. Foreman led off the inning with a triple down the rightfield line. That was followed by walks to Brent Chavez and Vopinek which loaded the bases with no out. Loop followed with his second RBI of the game, singling up the middle to plate Foreman. After an odd 9-2 fielder's choice for the first out of the game, Biola added another on an RBI groundout by Nick Rotkowitz.
The Eagles tacked on a final run in the fifth with a two-out rally. Rotkowitz and Steven Alexander collected hits to put runners at the corners with two out. Daniel Bodemer struck out to follow by the wild pitch allowed Bodemer to reach and the baserunners to advance 90 feet. It gave Biola a commanding 6-0 lead.
The Eagles turned the game over to Alexander in the eighth inning, but the Biola defense fell apart and Cal State San Bernardino was able to get a pair of unearned runs. After allowing a leadoff double, Alexander coaxed a flyout to right field by Chris Olsen. But the throw to third sailed past everyone and allowed the runner to come all the way around and score.
Two batters later, a slow-roller to first turned into an adventure for Vopinek at first, who could not seem to keep the ball in his mitt despite repeated efforts. After a stolen base, Brent Planck drove home the second run of the inning with a single to center.
However, that would be all for the Coyotes as Alexander struck out the final batter of the inning and Vopinek came on to pitch a perfect ninth as the Eagles picked up the win.
Foreman finished the day with three hits in five at-bats, scoring a pair of runs and adding a stolen base. Gebbers added a 2-for-4 day, scoring a run and adding two RBIs.
Biola returns to action on Monday (Apr. 13), traveling to El Cajon to make up a GSAC doubleheader at San Diego Christian College. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
