Foreman, O'Neill Lead Biola to 4-3 Win at Cal Baptist

Chris Foreman
BOX SCORE

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Chris Foreman scored three of Biola's four runs and starting pitcher Bobby O'Neill helped make them standup as the Eagles picked up a 4-3 GSAC victory over California Baptist University on Thursday afternoon.

Biola improved to 9-10 with the victory, its seventh in the last nine games, and move up to 4-4 in GSAC play. The Lancers drop to 13-8 and 5-6 in the conference, suffering their second-straight one-run loss at the hands of the Eagles.

Foreman did an incredible job of finding his way on base despite going 1-for-4 on the day. He reached and scored on a walk and an error and came around for a third run after collecting his lone single of the day.

Foreman played an integral part in Biola's seventh-inning rally which snapped a 3-3 tie with the winning-run. The senior center fielder followed Gil Banwart's leadoff single. A failed sacrifice bunt attempt caught Banwart at third for the first out of the inning. During the next at-bat, Foreman broke for third while Cal Baptist reliever Sean Urena still held the ball on the mound. The hurler stepped on and had Foreman hung out to dry only to see the third baseman muff the throw which allowed him to round third and score.

It was the second unearned run of the game allowed by the Lancers and proved to be just enough for the Biola relief corps. Senior Charlie Gausepohl pitched a scoreless two innings, allowing just one hit and recording a big strikeout. Junior Billy Vopinek then closed out the game with a solid ninth to earn his third save of the year, though it wasn't without drama. With the tying run at first and two out, rightfielder Brian Sharp sent Foreman back to the centerfield wall with a big blast, but the Biola hero of the day made a catch at the fence to end the game.

The Eagles got on the board early with a run in the top of the first. Foreman reached on an error to lead off the frame and scored as Steven Alexander hit a double to left-center field. But the Lancers answered back with two runs in the bottom of the frame as O'Neill walked back-to-back hitters with one out. The first came around to score on a wild pitch with two outs with the other following on an RBI single by Cole Bullard.

The Eagles took the lead back in the third with a pair of runs as Hawkins Gebbers hit a run-scoring double, then came around to score on a single by Taylor Loop

Cal Baptist answered back in the sixth thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of Bobby Burk. But that would be it for the Lancers.

O'Neill picked up the victory with six strong innings, scattering seven hits and allowing three runs while striking out five. He improves to 3-1 on the season.

The Eagles return to the field on Saturday (March 7), hosting Fresno Pacific in a GSAC doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Eagles Diamond.
