BOX SCORE
WHITTIER, Calif. --- Forward
Danny Campbell and guard
Marlon King each scored 13 points to lead Biola to a 54-46 win over Whittier College in a non-conference game in Whittier on Tuesday night.
The Eagles improve to 3-0 with the victory while dropping the Poets to 0-2 on the season.
The game was not terribly pretty from a basketball standpoint as to the two teams shot under 40 percent and combined for 35 turnovers. However, Biola was able to withstand a fiesty Whittier squad to pull out the win.
The two teams played close throughout the first half with the Eagles holding a slight 22-20 edge with under 30 seconds to play. However, Campbell stole the ball from the Poets who were holding for the last shot and got an easy lay-up on the other end. Just a few seconds later Whittier again turned the ball over on the Biola side of the court and Campbell coverted a tough shot on the baseline and was fouled with just over a second left. He hit the free throw and helped the Eagles to a 27-20 halftime advantage.
In the second, Biola rolled up the score to 32-20 before the Poets began a strong comeback, eventually pulling within one at 37-36. However, the Eagles slowly pulled away and held on for a hard-fought victory.
Sophomore
Josh Miller had a good night in the low post, scoring seven points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
Whittier's Marcus Gibson led the Poets with 11 points.
Biola opens conference play on Tuesday (Dev. 2), traveling north to Fresno to take on Fresno Pacific University at 7:30 p.m.
