Oviedo, Smith Lead Biola at Redlands Pentathlon

Ben Oviedo placed second overall to pace the Biola swimmers

REDLANDS, Calif. --- The Biola University swim team made a strong showing in the Bulldog Pentathlon at the University of Redlands on Saturday at the Thompson Aquatic Center in Redlands.

The format for the meet was somewhat different than normal, as every swimmer competed in the 100 fly, 100 back, 100 breast, 100 free, and 100 IM. At the conclusion of these five events, the times from each event are added together to determine the fastest overall swimmer.

The men had several top finishers throughout the day. Junior Ben Oviedo took second overall in the men's standings, placing in the top five in all of the events. He placed first overall in the 100 fly (53.43), second in the 100 back (55.15), third in the 100 free (49.43) and fifth in the 100 breast (1:04.58).

Sophomore Brian Shepard placed fifth overall, taking third in the 100 fly (54.47), sixth in the 100 back (58.06), and seventh in the 100 free (49.84). Junior Zach Perkins finished eighth overall on the men's side thanks to placing first in the 100 free with a time of 48.86.

For the women, after the total times were calculated, sophomore April Smith finished 12th overall followed closely by sophomore Emily Mosbacher who finished in 15th place overall. Smith took first overall in the 100 breast (1:10.19) while Mosbacher took fifth in the 100 fly (1:01.82) and 14th in the 100 free (57.56).

Other top finishers for the women were by freshman Racheal Sirjord, who took fourth in the 100 fly (1:01.78) and eighth in the 100 back (1:04.12). Freshman Amber Kiel finished 12th in the 100 back (1:05.25), sophomore Hannah Lawman placed sixth in the 100 breast (1:12.07) while senior Sarah Warkentin finished ninth in the 100 free at 56.59.

The Eagles return to the pool on December 6th at 11:00am at Chapman University in a double dual against Chapman University and Whittier College.
