Biola pulls within one after Briley Phelps’ second-half goal

POMONA, Calif. --- Biola fell 2-1 at Cal Poly Pomona, dropping to 0-2 on the young season despite a second-half goal from Briley Phelps that pulled the Eagles within one.

The hosts broke through twice in a five-minute span early in the second half. A goal in the 47th minute put Cal Poly Pomona up 1-0, and the home side doubled its lead just three minutes later to make it 2-0.

Phelps answered in the 71st minute, scoring unassisted to cut the deficit to 2-1. The senior finished with five shots on goal out of seven attempts and nearly leveled the match late, but a penalty-kick attempt in the 88th minute was saved.

Laura Brennan started in goal for Biola and made one save across her 90 minutes of work. Hayden Gehring also played the full match. Biola put up 12 total shots to Cal Poly Pomona's 13 and held a 4-to-5 edge in corners.

Biola will continue their road trip against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday, September 3rd at 7 p.m.
