Whippo Walks It Off

Caruso sets stage for Whippo’s walk off hit in the Cornerstone Cup

LA MIRADA --- The Biola baseball team hosted the visiting Azusa Pacific Cougars on Saturday to close out a four game series. After dropping the first two games, the Eagles bounced back in walkoff fashion, winning 7-6.

Jonny Tewinkle and Luke Caruso both tallied two hits and an RBI. Oscar Knapp, Nicholas Whippo, Adiel Torres and Kevin Villegas chipped in timely hits, while Gabe Magallan and Blake Wentz dealt a brilliant game on the mound. Magallan tossed six innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits and five strikeouts. Wentz allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits across three innings. Dylan Alanis shut down the Cougars in the top of the tenth.

APU scored first in the first via an RBI groundout before Villegas lined an RBI triple to the right field corner to score Torres. Tewinkle followed with an RBI single to give the Eagles the lead.

In the fifth, the Cougars plated two runs via a double and a sacrifice fly. Knapp lined a two-run base hit to right field, scoring Torres and Caruso, tying the game at four apiece.

After APU scored in the seventh, Thomson tied it once more in the eighth.

In the ninth, both teams had clutch hits with two outs. Azusa scored on an RBI single. Caruso launched a game-tying home run on a 2-1 pitch.

In the tenth, Ty Cowley drew a lead off walk. With Ashton Pass pinch running and two outs, the Cougars intentionally walked Thomson, bringing up Whippo. On the first pitch, Whippo lined a single down the left field line to score Pass, as the Eagles walked it off in extras.

With the win, Biola improves to 17-18 overall and 13-14 in conference. They will play game two with a scheduled start time of 3 p.m.
