Doing What Is Necessary

Biola sweeps Vanguard to close out its scheduled regular season as winners of three straight and five of its last six.

COSTA MESA, Calif. — Biola collected 15 hits and used a pair of three-run innings to defeat Vanguard 8–6 in Game 2, completing a doubleheader sweep to close out their scheduled PacWest regular season.

The Lions struck first in this one with two runs in the bottom of the first, making it 2–0.

Biola answered with three runs of their own in the top of the second. Mikala Huskey singled to center to start the rally, and Ariana Banos doubled to left center to score Huskey. Kennadie Tsue singled to second base to put runners on the corners, and Leilani Salgado brought Banos home with an RBI groundout. Lizzie Byer capped the frame with an RBI single to center field that scored Tsue.

Vanguard answered right back in the bottom of the second to knot the game again. 

Biola broke the tie with another three-run third. The runs came courtesy many contributors. It began with a Kendall Nakano single. Then, Banos was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Tsue laid down a bunt single to score Huskey, and a wild pitch moved Biola's runners back into scoring position. Cami Lara then came off the bench and hit a patented pinch-hit double to center field, driving in both Tsue and Banos for a 6–3 advantage.

The Eagles tacked on another run in the fourth when a Lillianna Garcia single to center scored Alexa Medley Sheard to make it 7–3.

Vanguard would not go quietly. In the fifth they got two more, cutting the deficit to 7–5. DJ Symons entered the circle in relief of Kayla Bousquette and retired the back-to-back batters to end the threat.

Biola added an insurance run in the sixth as Garcia got another RBI with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Jackie Ibarra and push the lead to 8–5.

The Lions mounted one final push in the seventh, getting the go-ahead run into the batter's box with two outs in the inning. Ultimately, Symons handled all the pressure and got a fly out to center to end the game and seal the save.

Bousquette earned the win in the circle, improving to 16–5 on the season after going 4.1 innings. Symons picked up the save — her fifth of the year — finishing with 2.2 innings of relief, allowing one earned run on three hits with one strikeout.

Biola finished with 15 hits in the game. Nakano and Huskey each went 3-for-4 to lead the offense, while Ibarra added two hits. Tsue went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Lara's pinch-hit double drove in two.

With the sweep, Biola improved to 35–18 on the season and 28–7 in PacWest play to close out the regular season. The team has one bit of unfinished business. Coach Kristin Halte's Eagles travel to Atherton on Thursday, April 30. They will pick up where they left off in a 3-3 halted game versus Menlo. First pitch of the top of the eighth inning is scheduled for 10 a.m.
