Magallan Makes It The Distance

Gabe Magallan delivers Biola its first shutout of 2026.

LA MIRADA, Calif. Gabe Magallan fired a complete-game shutout and James Whitman launched a three-run home run in the first inning as Biola blanked Vanguard 8-0 in seven innings to complete a doubleheader sweep at Eagles Diamond.

Magallan was dominant from start to finish, scattering just two hits over 7.0 innings with five strikeouts and three walks on 105 pitches. He retired the side in order in three of his seven frames and struck out the side in the sixth, capping the first shutout win of the season for Biola. A called strike three made for an exciting final out for the senior standout.

The Eagles wasted no time getting on the board with Whitman jumping on a 1-0 pitch and driving it to left field for a three-run homer to make it 3-0. Reef Danner later laid down a sacrifice bunt that turned into another run when the pitcher's throw sailed wide, allowing Kyle Rogers to score and pushing the lead to 4-0 — all before Biola recorded its first offensive out. Danner stole second and third and then scored on a throwing error by the catcher to cap a five-run opening frame.

Whitman finished 3-for-3 with the home run, three RBI, yet another intentional walk, and a run scored. The intentional walk he drew in the sixth was a testament to the respect the Lions' staff had for him all afternoon. He is top-5 in NCAA Division II in on-base percentage at this point.

The lead held at 5-0 through five innings as Magallan kept Vanguard off balance.

Biola tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth to put the game away. Josh McAninch led off with a double to center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a pitching change brought Nathaniel Garcia to the mound, Luke Caruso and Tommy Kendlinger each had RBI knocks in the frame and Ty Cowley picked up an RBI when he was knocked by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Magallan closed it out in the seventh, working around a pair of walks to strike out Andrew Olsen for the final out and cap the complete game. He moved above .500 for the year.

Vanguard committed five errors in the loss and managed just two hits as a team.

Biola moved to 23-23 on the season and 19-19 in PacWest play. The Eagles continue the four-game series with Vanguard tomorrow at the Lions' home site.
