Eagles Fall To CUI In Sudden Death

Biola storms back and forces overtime but fall 12-11 in sudden death battle for top seed

LA MIRADA --- The Biola women's water polo team faced the Concordia University Irvine Golden Eagles for their final regular season game and the No. 1 seed in the WWPA on the line. In a game spanning 41 minutes, the Eagles fell to the Golden Eagles in sudden death, 12-11.

Fernanda Luna logged 14 saves across the 41 minutes. Luna came up with clutch stops on breakaway opportunities that kept BU within reach. Ava LoBue led the Eagles with five points, including one goal and four assists. Destiny Moreno followed closely behind with four points, a hat trick and an assist, while Gwendolyn Pidd logged her 10th hat trick of the season. Stephanie Rodriguez scored twice while Annabella Rapp and Alyah Ibarra tacked on solo goals.

CUI pulled ahead with a quick 4-1 run in the first four minutes and fifteen seconds. Moreno scored the first goal for Biola and Pidd closed out the frame with a goal.

In the second period, Moreno logged her second goal of the game before the Golden Eagles tacked on two more, leading 6-3 at the half.

The Eagles were slow to start offensively but exploded in the third period, outscoring CUI 5-2. Rodriguez scored on a powerplay opportunity to open the scoring for BU. Moreno, A. Ibarra, LoBue and Rodriguez all scored for Biola, closing out the frame on a 4-0 run.

In the fourth, both teams scored twice. The Golden Eagles retook the lead two and a half minutes into the period. Pidd answered, converting a five-meter penalty. CUI found the back of the net regaining the one goal lead. Pidd scored on the Eagles final possession with 16 seconds left.

The first overtime period saw two goals scored, one by each side. Concordia scored a powerplay goal with 47 seconds left before Rapp scored the final goal of both overtime periods, sending the game to sudden death.

CUI won the sprint and scored on their first possession to seal the win.

Biola moves to 9-17 overall and 6-2 in conference. They will travel to Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine, California for the WWPA Women's Water Polo Championships, beginning April 10.
