Eagles Drop Finale to HPU

Tewinkle and Whitman go back-to-back, but early deficit and countering Sharks offense take the series

LA MIRADA --- The Biola baseball team hosted the final game of a four game stretch against the Hawaii Pacific Sharks on Monday afternoon. The Eagles fell to the Sharks, 10-7.

Three Eagles recorded two or more hits. After a slow start to the series, Jonny Tewinkle went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, including a home run. James Whitman went 2-for-4 driving his 13th home run of the season over the center field wall. Kevin Villegas also went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Oscar Knapp got the start for BU. Knapp threw three and a third innings, giving up four runs on three hits and four walks while striking out two. Nathan Hernandez followed Knapp, tossing two and a third, allowing three runs on five hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Aidan Cube was the third Eagle to pitch, recording four outs. He gave up two runs on three hits, a walk and a strikeout. Blake Wentz was the final pitcher for BU. Wentz tossed two innings, allowing one run on four hits, a walk and two strikeouts.

HPU posted three runs in the first two innings before Biola tallied their first RBI. Kyle Rogers reached on a walk before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Adiel Torres drove in Rogers on a sacrifice fly.

After the Sharks scored twice in the fourth, the power duo of Tewinkle and Whitman responded for BU. On a 1-0 pitch, Tewinkle drove one over the left field wall. Whitman went back-to-back on a 2-1 pitch, homering to the deepest part of the yard.

Biola kept chipping away in the fifth. Villegas singled to center and Luke Caruso was hit by a pitch. Tewinkle then doubled to left center to score Villegas, and after Whitman was intentionally walked to load the bases, Knapp lofted a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Caruso.

HPU tacked on a run in both the sixth and seventh innings, retaking their three run lead. Knapp cut the lead to two in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Caruso on an RBI single.

In the eighth, Caruso squibbed a ball past the first baseman for an RBI double, scoring Ryan Han. That would be the final run Biola would score.

HPU added an insurance run in the ninth, beating Biola by a final score of 10-7.

The Eagles move to 18-22 overall and 14-18 in conference. They will host a four game series against the Chaminade Silverswords, beginning April 17th at 12 p.m.
