A Battle To The Very End

Biola Women’s Water Polo ended its season against CUI in Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. --- The culmination of a season's effort came to a completion for the Biola women's water polo team. The Eagles faced off against the hosts Concordia University Irvine Golden Eagles inside Woollett Aquatics Center. In a low-scoring affair, the Eagles fell to CUI, 4-3.

Destiny Moreno, Alyah Ibarra, and Gwendolyn Pidd scored Biola's three total goals. Myah Ibarra and Yalissa Tellez logged assists. Fernanda Luna logged 13 saves for a save percentage of .765

After dropping the opening sprint, defense set the tone early. Moreno scored the first goal of the game after five and a half minutes of scoreless water polo. CUI responded on the next possession, capitalizing on the powerplay chance. After one period, the game was tied, 1-1.

Both teams opened the frame with powerplay opportunities that came up empty. Luna had three massive stops that kept CUI off the board. Biola struggled to find the back of the net, until A. Ibarra put BU ahead on a breakaway goal. Luna came up huge, stopping a five-meter penalty. CUI was unable to capitalize on another five-meter but found the game tying goal with 30 seconds left in the half. Luna logged eight first half saves.

With the game all square at two, Luna continued to anchor the Eagles. CUI logged the first score of the second half on a powerplay goal. Stephanie Rodriguez, Pidd and M. Ibarra fired shots that came up empty. With only one goal scored in the third frame, the Eagles trailed 3-2.

Down one to begin the final period, Biola looked to Pidd to tie it up on the first possession. Off a pass from M. Ibarra, Pidd beat the keeper. CUI found the decisive fourth goal with 4:21 on the clock. Holding the last possession, The Eagles called their final timeout to set up the final play of the game. A skip shot attempt by Moreno jumped over the bar. In a defensive battle, the Eagles fell 4-3.

Three Eagles were named to the WWPA All-Tournament team. Fernanda Luna and Gwendolyn Pidd were named to the first team, while Ava LoBue was named to the second team.

Congratulations to Mia Mulhall, Devon Coppes, Emily Guedel and Ava LoBue, the last inaugural Eagle, on their careers with the women's water polo team.

The Eagles close their season with a record of 11-18 overall.
