LA MIRADA, Calif. — Biola Tennis is well-represented in the current Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division II rankings, released on March 4. Highlighting all the accolades is a
number one national ranking for the men's top doubles pairing of
Angel Guerrero Melgar and
Alejandro Flores Monteverde.
The duo's top ranking is the highest individual ranking for any Biola Tennis student-athletes in the NCAA Division II era. It's the highest ranking for any individual in Biola Men's Tennis history.
Guerrero Melgar and Flores Monteverde are 4-0 playing together so far during the spring season, including a recent 6-4 win over a top-10 pairing from Azusa Pacific. Dating back to last season, Flores Monteverde has won 14 of his last 15 doubles matches. In the fall, the pairing came together to win the west region ITA championship and finish top-8 in the nation.
"Angel is a new player on the team, but when Angel first got here they meshed very well from the beginning," said Head Coach David Goodman. "They won the fall tournament, gained confidence from that and continue to get better every week."
Biola Tennis is off to a remarkable start to the 2026 season, with the men's team holding a perfect 7-0 record, which includes major wins over APU (4-3) and
Hawaii Pacific (4-3). The performance so far has the
Eagles' men ranked No. 22 overall according to the ITA. The women's team is now 5-3 and ranked
No. 50 in the most recent ranking set.
"It has been an amazing start to the season," said Goodman. "The guys are very motivated this year. They know we have a good team. They are not satisfied with just starting well but want to finish well, too."
The team is midway through its season, which culminates with the PacWest Conference tournament in April and NCAA tournament in May. Each team has five more regular-season home matches scheduled. View their schedules on the Biola Athletics website and make plans to catch a match at the recently refreshed Biola Tennis Center.
"We haven't achieved anything yet," said Goodman. "Our goal is to be playing for conference championships and national championships. We are looking forward to working hard and hopefully achieving it."
