Eagles Rally Past APU

Biola erases late deficit behind Rodriguez’s four points to secure fifth straight win

GLENDORA, Calif. --- The Biola women's water polo team faced off against familiar foe and Cornerstone Cup Rival, Azusa Pacific inside the Citrus Aquatic Center. The Eagles won in comeback fashion by a final score of 13-11.

Stephanie Rodriguez led the Eagles with four points, including two goals and two assists. Destiny Moreno logged a hat trick. Ava LoBue, Annabella Rapp, and Alyah Ibarra all scored twice while Mia Mulhall collected two points, recording a goal and an assist. Fernanda Luna logged eight saves and two steals to lead the defense.

The first period started fast as both teams combined for five goals in the first four minutes. Rodriguez and LoBue netted the opening goals for BU. Gwendolyn Pidd added on one more before the end of the period as the Eagles trailed 5-3.

Both teams held it down defensively in the second before A. Ibarra brought Biola to within one on a powerplay goal. APU tacked on two before the end of the half, including a goal at the buzzer.

The Cougars picked up where they left off scoring the first goal of the second half. Rapp countered with a powerplay goal at the five-minute mark. APU added two more before the Eagles answered with four goals to close the third, cutting the deficit to one heading into the final frame. Goals from Moreno, Rodriguez and LoBue helped keep things within reach.

In the fourth, Mulhall tied it at 10 with six minutes remaining before APU answered right back to retake the lead. Moreno responded with a game-tying goal, knotting things at 11 all. Rapp scored the go-ahead five-meter and A. Ibarra added an insurance goal.

The Eagles have now won five straight. They will host four home games to conclude their regular season, beginning Friday, March 27 at 1 p.m. against WWPA opponent Fresno Pacific (6-16, 1-4).
