Eagles Keep Hot Streak Going

Biola wins its fifth match in a row to set up massive Saturday showdown.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Underneath the glaring sun and 90-degree heat, Biola Women's Tennis defended its home court and picked up a fifth win in a row by setting down Colorado Mesa by a 5-2 final score line.

It was a come-from-behind effort for the BU side as the Eagles lost the doubles point due to an epic 10-8 tiebreaker that decided the clinch at the no. 2 doubles flight. Ivet Stancheva and Dafne Andres Paton won a dominant doubles decision at the top spot (6-1). It was the third win of the year for the No. 42-ranked doubles pairing in NCAA Division II.

Biola went on to win five of the six singles matches, with no contest going beyond two sets. Alexis Romano got BU back on level in the first match to finish in singles play. Her opponent had to retire, giving Biola its first team point by default.

Andres Paton and Yeo Kyung Kim had the most impressive showings in singles on this Monday afternoon. Andres Paton blanked her opponent in set one and won 6-2 in set two, while Kyung Kim only surrendered three games to her opponent in a straight-set success. Andres improved to 9-3 on the season, with Kyung Kim moving to 10-1 as the first Eagle to win double digits this year.

Ivet Stancheva worked a gritty 7-6 first set win and then flew to a 6-2 second frame to pick up her team-best 5th no. 1 singles win of the season.

Alessia Radu improved to 4-0 while playing in the no. 3 position this season. Like Stancheva, she had a closer first set and then stomped her foot down in a decisive second frame.

The team win moves Biola to 9-3 overall and 6-2 in home matches at the Biola Tennis Center. Up next for the Eagles is a tough test against another local team on a hot streak. The Eagles will travel south on Saturday to face a 7-2 Point Loma team that's won six matches straight.
