Okada Joins BU Men’s Basketball Staff

The Eagles add experience to their coaching staff, as Matt Okada comes to La Mirada.

July 02, 2025

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola University Men's Basketball Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist announced the hiring of Matt Okada as the program's newest assistant coach.

Okada brings with him nearly two decades of experience at the collegiate level, including 13 years of coaching experience and leadership roles at NCAA Division II programs and a strong reputation for player development, recruiting, and academic support.

Most recently, Okada served as the Associate Head Coach at fellow PacWest school Dominican, where he helped lead the Penguins to several program firsts.

During his tenure at Dominican, he managed opponent scouting, recruiting, social media, study hall, budget planning, and video production—bringing a multifaceted skill set to the Eagles.

Before Dominican, Okada spent seven seasons at Cal Poly Pomona (2014–2021), where he helped guide the Broncos to five NCAA Tournament appearances, two CCAA conference titles, and consistent Top-25 national rankings. In 2020, he was named one of Silver Waves Media's Top 50 Most Impactful Division II Assistant Coaches.

Okada's earlier coaching stops include roles at Allan Hancock College, Imperial Valley College, and as video coordinator and team manager at the University of the Pacific, where he contributed to a Big West Conference championship and postseason success. He also interned with the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers in community relations.

A California native, Okada holds a master's of physical education in sports psychology from California University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor's in sports management from the University of the Pacific.
