Matt Okada

Matt Okada began his tenure as Asst. Men's Basketball Coach at Biola in July 2025, joining Dr. Dave Holmquist's staff.

Okada came to Biola from fellow PacWest member Dominican University of California, where he was associate head coach for four seasons (2021-22 through 2024-25). Dominican earned the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award in all four of his seasons and recorded several program firsts, including its first road win against Hawaii Pacific, its first win against Biola and its first season sweep of Azusa Pacific. Okada was the lead recruiter of Marcus McCutchen, Dominican's first All-PacWest selection since 2018.

Before Dominican, Okada spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at Cal Poly Pomona (2014-15 through 2020-21) under head coach Greg Kamansky. Over that span the Broncos won two CCAA regular-season titles and one CCAA tournament title and qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament five times. His duties there included recruiting, camps, academic monitoring and on-court instruction. In 2020, Silver Waves Media named him one of the Top 50 Most Impactful Division II Assistant Coaches.

Okada began his coaching career in the junior college ranks, as an assistant at Imperial Valley College in 2012-13 and at Allan Hancock College in 2013-14, where the Bulldogs qualified for the state tournament. From 2008 to 2010 he worked for the University of the Pacific men's basketball program, first as a student manager and then as video coordinator; Pacific won the Big West regular-season title in 2009-10. He also interned in the executive offices of the Philadelphia 76ers in 2007-08.

A Gardena, Calif., native, Okada graduated from Narbonne High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in sports management from the University of the Pacific and a master's degree in physical education, with an emphasis in sports psychology, from California University of Pennsylvania in 2013.

Okada is a three-time NBL world champion in martial arts. He and his wife, Melanie, have a daughter, Maia.
