All Smiles on Senior Day

Biola men’s basketball was victorious on a night of celebration, honoring five seniors at Chase Gymnasium.

LA MIRADA --- It was a great night in La Mirada on Saturday, as the Biola Eagles took the win on Senior Night. A gritty battle with Westmont (13-14, 11-8 PacWest) resulted in a well-earned victory for the BU men's basketball squad (21-6, 15-4 PacWest) with a 74-70 final score.

The winning streak reached 10 on Saturday with the help of 29 points from Casey Cappo. The team extended its program record winning streak in the NCAA DII era, despite trailing for over 18 minutes against the Warriors.

Westmont came out of the gates swinging, scoring the first five points and holding a lead for the opening 10 minutes of the contest.

The Eagles were always within six points of the visitors and eventually grabbed their first lead of the game with four minutes left in the first half. Erik Howlin brought the spark, sinking back-to-back triples to take the lead, before Cappo added a layup for an 8-0 Biola run.

The Warriors responded before the break, retaking control for a 37-34 halftime lead.

A few lead changes kicked off the second half but quickly the Eagles found their footing. By the second media timeout, Biola was out front, which would stay that way through the final buzzer.

A one or two possession lead for the Eagles finally ballooned late in the second half with a 10-2 run. Cappo scored eight of the 10 points in the rally, helping the team to its biggest lead at 70-59.

Over the final minute and a half, Westmont scored the final seven points but the result was not affected, as Biola held the lead at the buzzer.

Cappo's 29 points put him at 999 career points while at Biola. The senior was honored before the game along with Davian Brown, Daniel Esparza, Julien Franklin, and Hunter Ruck. Cappo also led the team in rebounds with eight but was followed closely by Brown with six and Ruck with five.

The Eagles did not shoot particularly well on Saturday, hitting 31.6 percent of their three-point attempts but Esparza and Howlin each cashed in two important triples apiece.

Howlin was impactful on both ends of the floor, posting 16 points, four steals, and two blocks.

Biola will wrap up the regular season next week at Azusa Pacific, taking on the Cougars at 7:30 pm on Thursday.
