Eagles Battle in 2025 Opener

The BU men’s basketball squad had no give up on Thursday, but fell to the visiting Urban Knights.

LA MIRADA --- The first game for the Biola men's basketball squad of the 2025 calendar year did not go as planned. Injuries slowed the Eagles (9-4, 3-2 PacWest), who came up short against PacWest foe, Academy of Art (8-4, 4-1 PacWest).

The offense did not come easy for Biola, as the team shot 33.8 percent from the field and 26.7 percent from beyond the arc. BU opened the game with six threes in the first half at a 37.5 percent clip but a 2-14 second half did not keep the momentum.

ART U moved ahead in the early going but BU rallied with a 10-3 run. Casey Cappo posted five-unanswered points before Daniel Esparza delivered a trey to give Biola its first lead since the opening points with five minutes to go in the opening half.

A timeout from the Urban Knights reset the tone and the visitors were back on the attack. ART U pushed ahead for a double-digit lead, before finishing the half leading by nine.

Two starters for BU saw less than 10 minutes of action due to injury early in Thursday's contest. Both Nathan Medina and Erik Howlin left the game in the first half and did not return.

Within the first two and a half minutes of the second half, Biola kept it close with a 6-0 run. Another ART U timeout halted another BU momentum swing and the visitors rebuilt their lead. BU did not score for the next nearly four minutes of action and the Urban Knights led by 14 with just under 14 minutes to go.

The Eagles never trailed by more than 16 but were unable to pull within single digits, ending the night with a 82-67 final score.

Cappo paced Biola in the scoring column with 18 points and was followed closely by Davian Brown with 17. Despite playing just nine minutes, Medina netted eight points with two triples.

Facundo Aranda put together a strong performance off the bench with seven rebounds and three steals in 23 minutes of action.

Jonah Alvarez hit the court for the first time this season, returning from a leg injury that kept him out all of last season.

Biola will look to return to the winning column on Saturday, hosting Jessup at 2:00 pm.
