Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Ethan McGarvey, Sports Information Director

Biola’s Guards Deliver Big

Three BU starters combined for 60 points, as the Eagles were victorious over Jessup.

LA MIRADA --- Biola men's basketball (10-4, 4-2 PacWest) battled Jessup for the first time as PacWest opponents and came out on top in Chase Gymnasium. Two Eagles drew their first career starts, as BU put together an 87-74 rout of the visiting Warriors (6-6, 3-3 PacWest).

"We have some players that are injured so some of the bench players had to step up and that was my mentality, to come up, play as hard as I can and help the team win," commented Facundo Aranda

Aranda and Chris Harris entered the starting lineup with recent injuries to Nathan Medina and Erik Howlin and each delivered for the BU squad. The duo drew their first career starts with Aranda netting a career-best mark in points with 19 on Saturday.

The first half was a close-knit battle with six lead changes and eight ties, while the biggest lead for either team was Biola at 43-35 with 30 seconds to go before the break.

BU maintained a steady lead into the second half, swaying between a margin of three and nine for 13 minutes. As the game shifted to the final few minutes, the Eagles turned it up a notch.

From 7:22 left in the game to 3:41, Biola offered up a 13-0 run to seal the victory. The BU defense was stifling, holding the Warriors to 0-5 shooting in the stretch with a pair of Casey Cappo rejections. On the other end, the Eagles knocked down three triples, including a three-point play to open up a 80-62 advantage with less than four minutes to go.

The leading scorer for the Eagles, Davian Brown, collected 23 points on 60.0 percent shooting. He was lights out from downtown with five treys and added three assists and seven boards.

Aranda grabbed 19 points and was followed by Daniel Esparza with 18 points in the win. Esparza also offered an efficient performance, shooting 66.7 percent from long range and 63.6 percent from the floor.

The BU squad outrebounded Jessup, 42-34, thanks to a team effort, as seven Eagles corralled multiple rebounds. Biola also led on the scoreboard most of the way in the afternoon matchup, leading for 32 minutes.

"This win means a lot for us," added Aranda. "We have a trip to Hawaii next week and it is going to be tough to win away, but we needed this win to keep ourselves in the hunt for the PacWest Championships."

Biola men's basketball will head out for Hawaii and face Chaminade on Thursday at 9:30 pm PST.
