Biola Narrowly Falls

Despite trailing the whole way, BU battled until the end at Hawaii Hilo, falling 58-54.

HILO, Hawaii --- Physical defense defined the day between Biola (14-8, 9-5 PacWest) and Hawaii Hilo (14-9, 8-6 PacWest). A low-scoring affair favored the Vulcans in a 58-54 contest, in the opening game of the Eagles' Hawaii road trip.

The Biola offense struggled to get solid footing on Thursday. For just the third time this season, the Eagles were held under 60 points.

On the other end, BU kept the game within reach, holding the Vulcans to 35.6 percent shooting from the field.

From the jump, UHH worked from ahead. The host squad held a lead for over 37 minutes of the bout. Separation came with a three minute scoreless stretch for Biola and a 7-0 run for the Vulcans.

Before the half, the Eagles drew it back in with a 19-9 run. BU turned in eight field goals and three triples to cut their deficit down to seven at the break.

In the second half, the Vulcans continued to push their advantage and got back to a double-digit lead. UHH boasted a 13 point edge with just seven minutes left in the contest.

The Eagles had a final push in them and made it a fight in the waning minutes. BU held UHH to two points over the next nearly seven minutes and brought the game within reach. An 11-2 run put the Eagles just four points shy at 55-51 with 1:31 left in the contest.

Hawaii Hilo staved off the final attempts from the Eagles and finished the 58-54 game.

Maximo Milovich was an all-around beast on Thursday. The forward scored 12 points, while bringing in 16 rebounds to pace all players.

Nathan Medina and Daniel Esparza collected double-digit points, as Medina led Biola with 13 and Esparza followed with 12.

The Eagles will move on to face Hawaii Pacific on Saturday at 8:30 pm PT.
