Slow First Half Hampers Eagles

Biola suffered its second defeat in Hawaii on Saturday night to HPU.

HONOLULU, Hawaii --- The Eagles (14-9, 9-6 PacWest) continued their Hawaii road trip with a contest at Hawaii Pacific (15-7 10-4 PacWest) on Saturday night. Only 23 points in the first half hindered the BU squad, as the team fell 79-70 to the Sharks.

The early going of the weekend bout was a close-knit battle between the Eagles and Sharks. The two teams went back and forth for six lead changes and three ties through the first 14 minutes of the contest.

After a 20-20 tie, Biola went 1-8 to finish the first half. The team added a pair of turnovers in the six-minute drought, as HPU went on a 13-3 run. The host squad scored on its last five possessions of the half for a 33-23 lead.

The Sharks' lead continued to grow and reached a game-high at 16 multiple times in the second half.

BU battled back with seven minutes to go, cutting into its looming deficit. A 9-0 run put the Eagles within seven with over four minutes remaining. Casey Cappo pulled together seven-straight points with four free throws and a triple in the rally.

Biola got within seven five more times in the waning minutes but could not come any closer. HPU always presented an answer to a BU run on the way to the 79-70 finish.

Cappo paced the Eagles with 18 points on Saturday. The junior shot 6-13 from the field for a 46.2 field goal percentage with five rebounds.

Daniel Esparza exploded in the second half, netting 15 points. He added eight rebounds and a team-high four assists to go along with his game total of 17 points.

Off the bench, Tyus Parrish-Tillman put in work with 11 points in 15 minutes of work. The sophomore was strong in the paint, shooting 3-5 from the floor and 5-6 from the charity stripe.

BU men's basketball will conclude its road trip on Monday with a bout at Chaminade at 9:30 pm PT.
