Eagles Fall Away Late on the Road

BU battled the top team in the PacWest and hung on until the final minutes against Academy of Art.

OAKLAND, Calif. --- Biola men's basketball took to the planks on Thursday night with the final two regular season games in front of them. The first was a road matchup against Academy of Art (20-7, 15-4 PacWest), who sat atop of the PacWest standings entering the game. BU (16-11, 11-8 PacWest) fell in the contest, dropping to the Urban Knights, 76-62.

Daniel Esparza was a bright spot on offense, compiling 16 points for the Eagles. The point guard also paced the squad with four assists, taking part in 26 of the team's points. He was quick to the trigger on Thursday, posting 10 points in the opening half.

The early going saw the Eagles keep pace with ART U. The host squad held a meager lead throughout the first half but back-to-back three-pointers from BU pulled the Eagles within two points.

Academy of Art bounced back though, rebuilding its lead before the halftime break with a 14-6 run in a four-minute stretch.

Biola came out of the break ready to go and responded with an 8-0 run to get back within one possession. Four different Eagles scored in the rally, while the BU defense grabbed two blocks and a forced turnover.

Once again, ART U regained its momentum and pushed its lead back up. The deficit for BU hovered around 10 for the rest of the second half until the four minute mark, as the Urban Knights pushed the game out of reach in the closing minutes.

BU struggled from long range on Thursday, going 5-24 from three-point land for a 20.8 three-point field goal percentage.

Maximo Milovich led the effort on the glass, hauling in 11 rebounds. The junior reached double-digit boards for the 12th time this season, while improving his season average to 9.4 per game.

Casey Cappo joined Esparza with double figures in points, offering up 13. The second half was his friend, as he notched nine points in the back half of the contest.

The Eagles will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, facing Dominican at 3:30 pm.
