Slow and Steady Wins the Race

BU men’s basketball overcame a slow first half to nab a win at Fresno Pacific.

FRESNO, Calif. --- Defense was the name of the game on Saturday afternoon at Fresno Pacific (5-13, 4-7 PacWest). Biola (13-7, 8-4 PacWest) earned a hard-fought win over the Sunbirds with a 62-50 final score.

Biola brought a halt to FPU's four-game win streak, while also stopping its own two-game losing streak with Saturday's result.

The first half saw a Biola offense that could not buy a bucket. Through 15 minutes of action, the Eagles went just 1-19 from the floor for a 5.3 field goal percentage. The team also went 0-8 from deep with eight turnovers in the stretch. Positively, BU went a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line to help end the half with 19 points.

On the flip side, the BU defense was on its game to start Saturday's contest. FPU shot just 31.8 percent from the field and boasted a mere 20-19 lead at the break. The Eagles also forced nine Sunbird turnovers in the first half.

In the second 20 minutes, the Sunbirds continued to hold a meager lead, until Casey Cappo took over. The junior got red hot, scoring the first 14 points for the Eagles. Cappo hit seven of eight attempts, as he led the Eagles to a 33-30 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the contest.

The visitors responded after the next media timeout and retook a small lead, as the game progressed past the 10 minute mark.

The next BU run came with eight and a half minutes left and Biola found a groove to the finish. The Eagles put together a 13-3 run over a 2:43 stretch without missing a single shot in the rally.  Biola scored on six straight possessions for a 48-42 advantage.

The good times continued to roll, as the BU squad continued to build its lead in the waning minutes. The lead ballooned to 15 in the final seconds before settling at 12 in the 62-50 final.

Cappo recorded 18 points in the second half and totaled 20 for the game. Nathan Medina tied Cappo at the top of the scoring column with 20, sinking nine free throws and three triples.

Maximo Milovich was a beast on the boards, corralling 15 rebounds and eight offensive boards.

The Eagles will continue their road trip for their next contest, facing Concordia on Thursday at 7:30 pm.
