Biola Pulls Away Late

The Eagles made a break for it in the second half, earning a revenge win over Concordia.

IRVINE, Calif. --- The BU men's basketball squad left no doubt on Thursday night, defeating Concordia (10-9, 7-6 PacWest), 69-59. The Eagles (14-7, 9-4 PacWest) took care of business on the road, thanks to a 14-3 run in the second half.

With 11 minutes left in the game, the two teams remained even on the scoreboard, 44-44. The final stretch would make the difference and Biola was the team to elevate.

Over a five minute stretch, BU put together a 14-3 run to create separation. Biola's defense held CUI to 1-4 shooting and three turnovers, while going 5-7 on the offensive side. Casey Cappo led the run with six points and was followed by Facundo Aranda with five of his own.

The rest of the way, Biola focused on the free throw line, sinking 7-10 to secure the victory.

Nathan Medina had the hot hand in the opening half. The sophomore guard's shot was unblemished through 20 minutes, going 4-4 with three triples and 13 points.

The BU lead maxed out at nine in the first half with the help of Medina's offense but Concordia would not let the game slip away.

In the final eight minutes of the first half, the Golden Eagles sank three treys and six field goals to bring the game back into balance. Tyus Parrish-Tillman gave BU the momentum right back with an exclamation point to end the half. The BU center added the last five points to go into the break, giving the Eagles a 33-30 advantage.

The BU offense was extremely efficient on Thursday night, posting a 60.0 field goal percentage on 40 shot attempts. The team was also wisely selective at the three-point line, netting six of only nine attempts.

On the flip side, the defense held the Golden Eagles to a slow offensive night. CUI shot 40.0 percent from the field and gave up 15 turnovers.

Medina paced the squad in the scoring column with 19 on Thursday. Cappo and Daniel Esparza were next with 12 apiece. Esparza found success at the free throw line, drawing a team-high eight fouls and six foul shots.

BU won the battle in the paint, scoring 30 points near the basket and outrebounding Concordia, 30-23.

The Eagles will continue their road trip, heading to Hawaii next week and facing Hawaii Hilo on Thursday at 10:30 pm (PT).
