Biola Falters Late at Home

The final four minutes spelled problems for Biola, as the Warriors clinched the win on Saturday night.

LA MIRADA --- Saturday night's game inside Chase Gymnasium seemed to be leaning towards the Eagles (12-7, 7-4 PacWest) throughout the night. The crowd was lively and in theme of pajama night but the visiting Westmont Warriors (6-10, 3-7 PacWest) would not go away. The WC defense stepped up in the waning minutes and helped scoot by Biola, 72-68.

The Eagles moved ahead in the early going with a combination of four Eagles scoring in a 9-4 rally. Daniel Esparza gave the team its biggest lead yet with a three at 30-22.

Biola went into the halftime break, leading 41-33, while shooting 54.8 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from beyond the arc. Esparza paced the team with 11 points in the first half with five field goals on eight attempts.

BU maintained the pace entering the second half and led for nearly 20-straight minutes of game time going back to the first half. Biola held an advantage for nearly 27 minutes of the contest.

However, a big run from the Warriors shifted the outlook of the bout. Nine-unanswered points put Westmont ahead with 11:17 left in the game. The Warriors picked up two steals and two blocks in a stretch of four minutes while holding BU scoreless.

With the game within one possession, the battle was on as the clock ticked past 10 minutes remaining. The game went back and forth down the stretch with five lead changes and six ties in the second half alone.

The final four minutes was the difference though, as the visitor's defense got to work. The Eagles went scoreless again from the 4:06 mark to the 0:32 mark, allowing Westmont to open a six point lead. BU got within range with 24 seconds left but a turnover ended the last possession for Biola. In the final stretch, BU gave up four turnovers, while shooting 2-7.

BU did well on the boards on Saturday, outdoing WC, 38-30. 16 offensive rebounds for the group led to 15 second-chance points.

All five starters for Biola reached double figures, as Esparza paced the team with 15 points. Maximo Milovich paired his 11 points with four assists and eight rebounds.

Biola will hit the road for its next five games, starting with Fresno Pacific next Saturday at 4:30 pm.
