Fighting to the End

The Eagles fought tooth and nail on Wednesday night but could not overcome Point Loma in a 73-68 loss.

LA MIRADA --- Biola men's basketball put together a tough fight in a heavyweight bout against Point Loma. The Eagles (12-6, 7-3 PacWest) hosted the Sea Lions (12-5, 7-2 PacWest) in front of a packed house on Wednesday night and the difference between the two teams was razor thin. The visitors held off Biola in the end, as the Eagles fell 73-68.

Not much separated the two teams throughout the night. The largest lead for either team was seven, to go along with each team's biggest scoring run of seven. There were seven lead changes on Wednesday with nine ties between the two teams.

The difference came with the efficient outside shooting of the Sea Lions. The visitors knocked down 50.0 percent of their three-point attempts, hitting nine of 18. Biola outscored Point Loma, 38-20, inside the paint, while scoring one more field goal than the Sea Lions but a 9-4 advantage for PLNU on made threes pushed them ahead.

A tight first half ended on a 5-0 run for the Sea Lions, giving them a 37-31 lead at the break. Daniel Esparza was electric in the opening 20 minutes, scoring 12 of the team's 31, going six for eight from the field.

After falling to their biggest deficit of seven, the Eagles fired back with a 7-0 run to knot the game at 41. In the rally, PLNU missed eight-straight attempts which were aided by a pair of Biola blocks, while also giving away three turnovers.

Two possessions later, Nathan Medina gave Biola its first lead of the second half with a three-pointer assisted by Hunter Ruck.

The BU lead lasted 20 seconds, as Point Loma responded quickly and retook the lead with just under 12 minutes to go. BU never gained an advantage the rest of the way but tied the game four more times in the final few minutes.

Free throws defined the second half with each team attempting at least 15. PLNU sank just two more foul shots than Biola, despite having four more tries in the second half.

Medina was a perfect 8-8 from the charity stripe with 13 points in the second half. Medina led the squad on the night with 20 points on 50.0 percent shooting from inside and outside the arc.

Garrison Sherman picked up nearly 29 minutes of action off the bench and added eight points to the Eagles' cause.

BU men's basketball will retake the floor at Chase Gymnasium on Saturday at 7:30 pm against Westmont.
