Eagles Defeat No. 24 Sea Lions

The Eagles tallied 11 runs to take down Point Loma in game three of a four game series.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles (13-20) took down the No. 24 Point Loma Sea Lions (21-10) in an 11-7 victory on the nationally ranked team's home turf. Eagles pitching gave up five earned runs, but the offense backed them up to hang onto a win.Ā

The Sea Lions found themselves on the board first as they scored on an error in the bottom of the first inning.Ā

PLNU led 1-0 going into the top of the second, but the Eagles answered back in a similar way.Ā

With one out, Taylor Justus walked to give the Eagles a base runner. Noah Ruiz advanced Justus to scoring position, followed by Sam Lisiak, who singled up the middle. Lisiak's single sent Justus to third base, but the Sea Lions lost control of the ball and Justus reached home on an error to tie the game at one run each. The Eagles were unable to take a lead, but they were hopeful for the innings to come.Ā

Lucas Bixby pitched a scoreless second inning and his offense knew they needed to back him up. Tyler White drew a walk to start off the third inning. White then ended up on third base due to a wild pitch, which was followed by an error. Wyatt Duncan was unable to bring him in, but AJ Ortiz got the job done with an RBI single to center field. BU would have liked to extend their lead, but they were just grateful for a lead. The Eagles were on top 2-1 going into the bottom of the third inning.Ā

Bixby started off the third inning by striking out the first batter, but then walked the next guy. The Eagles retired the following batter for the second out, but the Sea Lions now had a runner in scoring position. A single hit to left fielder, James Whitman, scored the runner, but Whitman's throw beat the runner to record the third out. After three innings, the ball game was all tied up at two.Ā

Lisiak sparked a fourth inning rally for the Eagles by reaching base on an error followed by Whitman drawing a walk. With two runners on, Evan Rowe hit a sacrifice bunt and safely made it to first base due to another Sea Lions error. The Eagles took a 3-2 lead with runners on second and third. If PLNU has learned anything this season, it is to avoid pitching to Oscar Serratos. Serratos took his first intentional walk of the day to load the bases with no outs. Point Loma retired White and Duncan, but the Eagles were not done with their mid-game rally. Ortiz came up to bat and hit a two-RBI single to give the Eagles a 5-2 lead. Justus reached base on an error again, which brought in Serratos to extend the lead. Ruiz hit a single to bring in two more runners, but was out at second base. A six-run fourth inning gave the Eagles a comfortable 8-2 lead.Ā

Point Loma was unable to answer back in the bottom of the fourth, but was able to cut their deficit to 8-4 in the fifth inning thanks to a two-run home run.Ā

BU was scoreless in the fifth, but White hit a solo home run to add to Biola's lead. (9-4)

Bixby held the Sea Lions scoreless through the sixth inning. PLNU hit two home runs in the seventh inning, but still trailed the Eagles, 9-7.Ā

With one out in the eighth inning, the Sea Lions walked Rowe and then intentionally walked Serratos again. With two runners on and two outs, Duncan came up to the plate and hit a double to drive in the two runners.Ā

The Sea Lions were unable to make a comeback and the Eagles finished game one with an 11-7 victory.Ā

White, Ortiz and Lisiak each recorded two of the Eagle nine hits on Saturday afternoon. Ortiz had three RBIs on the day. White recorded his fourth home run of the season.Ā

Bixby pitched 6.1 innings striking out four, and walking only two. Bixby picked up his fourth win of the season on Saturday.Ā

The Eagles will play game two on Saturday evening as they look to tie up the weekend series against PLNU.
