Bixby Gifts BU a Shutout Win

Game two belonged to Biola and Lucas Bixby, as the sophomore tossed a shutout for a BU victory.

LA MIRADA --- Friday's seven-inning game two was a showcase for the arm talent of Lucas Bixby. The shutout belonged to the righty, as the Eagles (15-21, 9-9 PacWest) defeated RV Azusa Pacific (24-17, 16-10 PacWest), 5-0, behind three home runs.

"It was a tough loss in game one, where we just did not play clean enough," said head coach Jesse Rodgers. "I have consistently been impressed with our ability to bounce back from tough games and play great baseball when we need it most."

Bixby logged his 10th start of the season on Friday, vying for his fifth win of 2023. The sophomore transfer stepped in and stepped up against the nationally ranked Cougar squad.

With two outs in the first inning, Bixby gave up a single for APU's first hit of the game. The Cougars would not record another hit until the seventh and final frame. The next five batters were retired in order, before a walk put a man on.

In the outing, the righty allowed just three walks and two hits, while recording all seven scoreless frames. The team leader in strikeouts added to his season total with seven in the bout.

The offense did its part with power. When the Eagles got a hold of the ball, it was leaving the park.

The first homer came in the second inning, following singles from James Whitman and Noah Ruiz. Sam Lisiak had his at bat next and immediately missed a bunt on the first pitch. After meetings by both teams to talk about the threatening situation, Lisiak swung away and made the most of it. His hit went soaring over the left field fence for a three-run blast, marking his fifth home run of the year.

The next two long balls were off the bat of the same Eagle. AJ Ortiz tallied his second and third home runs of the Friday doubleheader with solo shots in the third and fifth frames. The homers were his eighth and ninth of the year and his first outing with a pair of home runs. The two hits also made for his fourth multi-hit game in his last five appearances.

Biola will continue its series with Azusa Pacific on Saturday, facing the Cougars on the road with a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm.
