Game One Goes 11

The front end of Saturday’s doubleheader at Azusa Pacific went 11 innings, as three homers were not enough for Biola.

AZUSA, Calif. --- Biola hit the road on Saturday and faced RV Azusa Pacific in a conference doubleheader. After splitting the first two games of the series, the two teams remained evenly matched with an 11-inning bout in game one on Saturday. The Cougars outlasted the Eagles in a 6-5 nail-biter.

Home runs ruled the day with nine of the combined 11 runs coming by way of the long ball. Biola launched three, while the Cougars logged two to go even at five runs through nine innings.

AJ Ortiz continued his hot streak with another homer. The cleanup hitter recorded multiple hits and a home run for a third-consecutive game, as he found sustained success against Cougar pitching. His homer came in the sixth with two RBI, moving his season total to 10.

A standout day came in from James Whitman, who posted a season-best mark of four hits in the contest. The freshman added his own home run, scoring Ortiz for a two-run shot.

The third home run came from Oscar Serratos. A solo shot opened up the sixth frame for BU, as all five runs for the Eagles were off the back of a homer.

From the seventh through the 11th, the Eagles best chance to break the tie and come away with a win was in the final frame. Back-to-back walks placed runners on first and second with one out, before Whitman poked a base hit through the right side. Biola looked to score from second but a perfect throw from the APU right fielder nabbed the Eagle at the plate. APU escaped with the 5-5 tie still intact.

The bottom of the 11th went quickly with four-straight walks to end the game. The Cougars walked it off with a walk for the 6-5 finish.

The crew of BU hurlers featured four right-handers. The group combined for 14 strikeouts in the lengthy affair. Bobby Brown opened the game with four innings of work and six strikeouts and was followed by Jake Anderson who offered a pair of scoreless and hitless frames.

Game two of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to start around 5:45 pm at the Cougar Baseball Complex.
