More and More Offense

Big time hits defined Saturday’s game one for both teams but the Sea Lions were the team with the lead at the end of nine.

LA MIRADA --- Of the eighteen half innings in game one on Saturday, only five were filled with zeroes. Biola (7-15) and Point Loma (14-7) combined for 24 runs in a back and forth nine inning slugfest. The visiting Sea Lions made the final push and collected a 13-11 win over the Eagles.

The two PacWest programs battled it out at Eagles Diamond in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday. In the latest NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball National Polls, Point Loma was receiving votes and sitting just outside the top-25.

Five lead changes brought drama throughout the afternoon contest. The largest lead for either team was two throughout the game, despite the high run total.

Biola gained its first lead in the third inning after back-to-back two run frames. Oscar Serratos gave BU the edge with a two-run shot to center field.

For three-straight innings, the Eagles tacked on exactly two runs to hold a 6-4 lead at the end of the fourth.

The home runs were flying on Saturday with a combined eight between the two teams. Point Loma picked up five, while the Eagles tallied three total long balls from AJ Ortiz, Wyatt Duncan, and Serratos.

A big homer for the Sea Lions came across in the top of the seventh. The two run shot moved PLNU into the lead at 9-8 with just three innings left.

Biola looked to respond and placed runners on second and third, after a double from Gavin Ayers. With two outs, Noah Ruiz stepped up in the crucial spot. The freshman worked through the lengthy at bat and won the battle with a double to left-center field. The two-RBI knock gave Biola the lead once again heading into the eighth.

Gilbert Lopez kept the visitors silent in the eighth, keeping the lead at 10-9 for Biola. In their at bat, the Eagles gave themselves a little more breathing room. With an 0-2 count, Duncan sent the ball over the fence. The solo shot moved the lead to two with three outs to go.

Point Loma rallied in the clutch though. The Sea Lions put the winning run on first and loaded the bases with one out. A double cleared the runners on base and put the visitors in front. A wild pitch scored the runner from second and PLNU suddenly had a 13-11 lead to force a bottom of the ninth.

Two quick outs put the Eagles offense behind early in the ninth. Jonathan Smith and Tyler White tried to spark a two-out rally with a single and walk, respectively. Unfortunately, PLNU found the third out and ended the game for the 13-11 finish.

As a team, Biola tallied 15 hits and six extra-base hits for a .375 batting average in the game. Two Eagles collected a trio of base knocks, including White and Serratos. Three more grabbed multiple hits, including Duncan, Taylor Justus, and Ruiz.

Biola and Point Loma will complete their doubleheader Saturday afternoon with a seven-inning bout at Eagles Diamond.
