Take One for the Team

Jonathan Smith sealed the game for Biola with a hit-by-pitch to advance the game-winning run.

LA MIRADA --- Walkoffs do not happen very often but even more rare is what Jonathan Smith did for the Eagles. A bases loaded hit-by-pitch of Smith sent the game-winning run across home plate for a 7-6 Biola victory.

The Eagles got on the board first in the back half of the double feature with the Sea Lions. BU (8-15) and Point Loma (14-8) faced off for game two on Saturday afternoon in La Mirada.

The BU offense put up a three-spot with just one hit in the bottom of the second. Oscar Serratos opened the inning with a double down the left field line, showing promise early. Serratos nabbed third and set up a sacrifice fly from James Whitman. The Eagles reset with two outs and no one on base with Austin Carillo walking to the plate. The left fielder reached via a walk to keep the inning going. Noah Ruiz put the ball in play next and the Sea Lions threw the ball away to put runners on second and third. Three-straight walks followed to plate two more runners for Biola.

The 3-0 lead for the Eagles did not last long. PLNU answered in the top of the third with a three-run home run, knotting the game at three. A BU error preserved the at bat for PLNU, leading to another run for the Sea Lions and a 4-3 lead for the visitors.

Back to the plate, BU kept the runs flowing with its second three-run inning. Once again, Serratos led off with a big play, logging a home run to tie the game at four. Sam Lisiak followed with a single of his own. Ruiz made the most of his chance and picked up his first career home run. The freshman left the yard for a two-run homer, giving Biola the 6-4 edge.

PLNU struck back with a two-out rally in the fourth. Two walks and two hits made for two runs, as the game was locked up again, this time at six runs.

Gabe Magallan snuffed out a PLNU opportunity in the sixth. The freshman faced a one-out bases loaded scenario with the number four and five hitters coming to the plate and escaped without a run allowed. A flyout and groundout moved the game safely into the next half inning.

The bottom of the seventh came and the dangerous Serratos was slated to leadoff. Wanting to avoid another game-changing play, the Sea Lions elected to intentionally walk the BU right fielder. Another intentional walk put runners on first and second after a wild pitch moved Serratos to second. A Ruiz walk loaded the bases for Smith in the crucial two-out spot.

The first pitch to Smith missed for ball one. The next pitch was an off-speed offering that zoomed in towards the feet of Smith. The sophomore happily took his base, as Serratos trotted home to walk it off.

"We bounced back really well after a tough finish to game one," commented head coach Jesse Rodgers. "We continued to fight and battle all day and we showed a ton of heart."

Magallan nabbed his first collegiate victory with two innings of work. The freshman gave up one hit through eight batters faced.

The Eagles will continue their non-conference series with Point Loma on Monday in San Diego at 12:00 pm.
