Eagles Can’t Hold Off No. 9 PLNU

Biola pushed ahead early but was unable to pull off the upset on the road against Point Loma.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- A tale of two halves defined Wednesday's game between the visiting Biola Eagles (14-9, 9-7 PacWest) and the 9th-ranked Point Loma Sea Lions (22-3, 17-0 PacWest). The opening 20 minutes belonged to BU but Point Loma surged back in the second half to take the 78-64 victory.

The Eagles looked great out of the gates on Wednesday night. Offensively, the BU squad was humming, hitting nine of their first 13 attempts from the field. Long distance shooting was working, as the team hit four treys in the opening 10 minutes, helping the team to a 14-point advantage.

Daniel Esparza highlighted the impressive run with 10 points, as the Eagles led 22-8. On the night, Esparza tallied 22 points, breaking the 20-point threshold for the fourth time this year.

Biola led for all 20 minutes of the first half, while holding a double-digit lead for eight minutes. In the closing part of the first half, the Sea Lions started to find their rhythm. The host squad went on a 17-8 run to come within three at the break.

BU clung to its lead at the start of the second half but the pressure from Point Loma kept mounting. At the 12:30 mark, the Sea Lions hit a big three-pointer to take the lead and the momentum was firmly in their favor. PLNU quickly grabbed a double-digit lead and kept control till the 78-64 end.

Despite the loss, BU stayed on brand with strong rebounding numbers. It was a total team effort, as the Eagles outrebounded PLNU, 36-29.

Erik Howlin was the next best scorer after Esparza, logging 13 points in the contest.

Biola will return home for a WHITE OUT game against Azusa Pacific inside Chase Gym on Saturday at 7:30 pm.
