Hot Shooting Cougars Stop Eagles

Biola could not overcome a big first half from Azusa Pacific in the Cornerstone Cup on Saturday.

LA MIRADA --- Chase Gymnasium was alive with fans from wall to wall, making the place shake with excitement. The rivalry between APU (18-6, 13-4 PacWest) and BU (14-10, 9-8 PacWest) was as thick as ever with the clash of the two men's basketball teams on the court. The Cougars were the ones to find the edge on Saturday night, utilizing a strong first half to carry them to a 75-64 triumph.

Out of the gates, the Cougars showed where they thrive. The three-point line was their friend as they shot 61.5 percent from deep in the first half. An 8-0 run for APU helped the visitors open up a 23-8 lead halfway through the first half.

Alex Wright led the way in the opening 20 minutes for BU, tallying eight points. The veteran tacked on a pair of triples, while Hunter Ruck added four points with a dunk.

As a team, the Eagles posted 19 points in the first half and trailed by 21 at the break.

Biola worked to get better outside looks coming out of the break and it succeeded. BU sank back-to-back three-pointers to start the second half and scored on five-straight possessions to reignite the crowd. A trey from Daniel Esparza at the 15 minute mark cut the BU deficit to 10 with plenty of time remaining.

APU responded with a rally of its own. The Cougars inched back forward and reclaimed a 20-point advantage once again.

Despite the deficit, Biola kept fighting, going on a 10-0 run. Five different Eagles scored in the stretch to bring them back within reach with six minutes on the clock.

Azusa Pacific came back with a three-pointer to snuff out the impending momentum. The Eagles were able to cut the APU lead to nine with just over 60 seconds left but the BU squad could not come within striking distance before the final buzzer.

Ruck capped off his performance with a double-double on the stat sheet. The forward tallied 11 points and a team-high 12 rebounds in 35 minutes on the court.

Esparza led the team in points with 20, while Wright followed closely with 18. Biola found its stroke in the second half, shooting 63.6 percent from beyond the arc.

Biola will be back in action next Thursday at Concordia at 7:30 pm.
