Eagles Fall Short

Game one of the Cornerstone Cup series did not fall in the Eagles’ favor, as they struggled to get more runs on the board after an early lead.

AZUSA, Calif. --- BU and APU kicked off a four-game non-conference series in Azusa on Friday afternoon. The Biola Eagles (3-5) fought hard but were unable to get in the groove, as they lost 6-1 against Azusa Pacific (4-6) in game one of the Friday doubleheader.

Biola's Austin Carillo picked up a walk to start the game, followed by a single to center field from AJ Ortiz. Wyatt Duncan came up to the plate and did what he does best, hitting an RBI double to left field which brought in Carrillo to get the Eagles on the board first. Unfortunately, Biola was unable to stretch out their momentum for more runs. BU led 1-0 at the end of the first inning.

Biola kept their lead heading into the bottom of the third inning but things got a bit rocky with a rally from the host squad. The Cougars followed up a hit by pitch with a double and an RBI groundout to take a 2-1 lead after three innings.

The base hits kept flowing for APU and they ended up tallying another run in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 3-1.

The Cougars' sixth and seventh batters found the pitch they were looking for and hit back-to-back home runs to right field in the sixth inning to add some fun insurance runs. APU tacked on one more in the final stretch to complete the 6-1 final score.

Lucas Bixby pitched a full six innings and struck out three batters, but unfortunately picked up his first loss of the season. Gilbert Lopez came in to relieve Bixby and pitched a quick scoreless seventh inning with  two strikeouts.

Wyatt Duncan has been key to Biola's scoring this season. With his RBI double in game one on Friday, he leads the Eagles with nine RBIs and 10 runs on the season. James Whitman went 2-4 with a double and a .750 slugging percentage against the Cougars on Friday afternoon.

The Eagles will see the first pitch of game two of Friday's doubleheader at Azusa Pacific around 3:00 pm.
