Comeback Effort Falls Short

Biola battled back in its conference opener but could not overcome Concordia on Wednesday.

LA MIRADA --- The start of PacWest play kicked off with a thriller against the Concordia Golden Eagles. The BU men's basketball team (4-4, 0-1 PacWest) fell behind in the second half but came within a last second shot in a 77-74 loss to CUI (4-3, 1-0 PacWest).

The first half featured a strong opening from Biola. The team picked up a 32-19 lead through the first 14 minutes of the contest. Nathan Medina and Maximo Milovich each scored eight in the opening 20 minutes to give the Eagles 33 points in the first half.

CUI stormed back in the final minutes before intermission. The Golden Eagles put together a 13-0 run to end the half and hold a 35-33 lead at the break.

Concordia continued to push its advantage and held an 11-point lead twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Biola kept within range as the minutes continued to wane, drawing within five at 62-57 and then at 65-60 with 2:43 on the clock. CUI maintained a two-possession lead until a Medina three-pointer brought the Eagles within reach with 39 seconds to go.

The two teams went back and forth as the lead teetered between three and five until a three-point play by Daniel Esparza brought the visitor's lead to two. A missed free throw from the Golden Eagles opened the door, as a Biola three-pointer would tie the game with nine seconds on the clock. The final look for the Eagles rimmed out and Concordia held on for the win.

Medina reached the 20-point mark for the third time this season, tallying 24 points on Wednesday. The sophomore hit three triples on 50.0 percent shooting from deep, while adding five rebounds and two steals.

Milovich logged a huge double-double with 14 points and 14 boards. He led all players with four offensive rebounds, helping the team to seven second chance points. Milovich also led the team with three assists in 28 minutes played.

Biola will be back in action on Saturday, competing on the road against Westmont at 7:30 pm.
