BU Holds Off Penguins

Biola led for nearly three quarters of the game and held off Dominican in a close affair.

LA MIRADA --- Daniel Esparza led a second half charge on Monday night, as the Eagles scored their third-straight conference win. Biola (7-4, 3-1 PacWest) picked up the 79-72 win over the visiting Dominican Penguins (4-7, 2-2 PacWest).

Esparza was the star of the show coming out of the halftime break. The junior was aggressive getting to the basket, scoring 19 points in the second half. He tallied the first four points of a 8-0 BU run, opening up a seven-point lead three and a half minutes into the half.

"I feel like this year my role is setting the tone in the first half and playing with pace to get the other guys going," said Esparza. "Once I see how everything is playing out, the second half is where I come alive, which has been pretty good for me this year."

The advantage peaked at 10 before the 12-minute media timeout with another Esparza basket.

Dominican was not out of it yet, bouncing back over the next four minutes. The visitors went on a 14-5 run to cut their deficit down to one.

BU maintained its edge but DUC remained within one possession for the majority of the next five minutes. Esparza's continued work in the paint and final minute free throws put the game out of reach for the Penguins, as the Eagles claimed the 79-72 victory.

The BU squad held the advantage on Monday night for 29 minutes of the contest. 42 points in the paint helped the Eagles take and keep the lead, as they dominated near the hoop. The strength in the paint led to a lopsided rebound total as BU bested DUC 47-33 on the boards.

Nathan Medina lived at the charity stripe on the way to the highest scoring output. Medina sank 11 free throws on a 91.7 free throw percentage with 26 points on the night. He put together a balanced performance with 13 points in each half.

Myja White offered an all-around showing with five points, four rebounds, four assists, and a huge block.

The rebound king in Maximo Milovich continued his dominance with 12 boards on Monday. He secured 10 defensive and two offensive rebounds, while also adding eight points and a team-high six assists.

Casey Cappo added 15 points for the Eagles as the third scorer in double figures, hitting six shots with a three-pointer.

Biola is right back on the court on Tuesday, facing Life Pacific in a non-conference bout at 7:00 pm in Chase Gymnasium.
