Esparza is Electric in Loss

Daniel Esparza came alive with 24 points on Thursday but the Eagles could not overcome CSUSB.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. --- Biola's quest against CCAA competition continued on Thursday on the road against CSU San Bernardino (3-0). The Eagles (1-2) nearly completed the comeback but the Yotes edged BU with a 65-58 final margin.

Daniel Esparza was the instigator on offense for an Eagles squad looking for its second win of the year. The junior paced the team with 24 points, hitting eight field goals and a pair of treys.

Biola trailed throughout the first half and into the second but Esparza and Maximo Milovich helped push the Eagles back into the game.

Down 53-41, BU turned on the jets with eight and a half minutes remaining in the contest. Esparza knocked down a three-pointer to get things going, before dishing out an assist. Milovich kept up the momentum, scoring eight points in a three-minute stretch to open up a Biola lead for the first time in the contest at 57-56. The 16-3 run was aided by eight Milovich points and an assist and six points from Esparza with two assists.

Unfortunately, CSUSB made the next basket and retained the lead through the final buzzer. The Eagles were held scoreless for the next three minutes after taking the lead, while the Yotes held them off.

Milovich ended the day with 15 points, to go along with eight boards.

The team was much more efficient in the second half, improving from shooting 27.3 percent in the first half to 40.0 percent in the second. BU attacked the paint, outscoring CSUSB 28-24 near the hoop.

Biola will be back on the planks on Saturday, as the team hosts Cal Poly Pomona at 7:30 pm.
