Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

First Half Flurries Lead To Win

Biola has two solid runs of scoring in the first half to build a big win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Biola Men's Basketball leapt back into the win column as they returned to Chase Gymnasium on Saturday night. Dr. Dave Holmquist's Eagles dismissed the visiting Cal Poly Pomona Broncos by way of a 81-74 victory.

The Eagles outpaced the Broncos by 12 points in the first half, utilizing stifling defense and an up-tempo and efficient offense. Maximo Milovich was a man on a mission for the birds in the opening stanza. The Argentine stood tall with 17 of Biola's 43 first-half points. He continued his recent trend of being locked in from deep, dropping in two triples during the first half.

"I'm just happy for my team," said Milovich. "We've been working together since the beginning of the year to win this thing."

The first 10 minutes of play was a back-and-forth battle, with a Cal Poly Pomona three-pointer giving the guests a 21-19 lead as the clock counted down to single digits left in the first frame. Their lead extended to 25-21 following an and-one conversion by Michael Ofoegbu.

Over the next four minutes, a 13-2 run by Biola changed the entire vibe of this game. That run included a sequence of three straight possessions of points as Hunter Ruck sandwiched a dunk between Milovich's two triples. The Eagles were 4-for-6 from the field during the run, while the Broncos went ice cold, going just 1-for-7. Myja White and Nathan Medina joined Ruck and Milovich with points during the streak.

After CPP brought it back within four points, the Eagles scored nine of the final 10 points of the first half to build a critical double-figure lead at the break.

The advantage proved to be most valuable through a slow-moving second half. The Eagles struggled to find offensive rebounds with the same regularity in half two, while Cal Poly Pomona shot at a much higher clip. The Broncos used that advantage to outscore Biola by five points in the second stanza.

Their surge was not enough as BU ultimately took care of the ball and made its free throws down the stretch to improve to 2-1 inside Chase Gym this year.

Biola made just 12 field goals in the second half, but went 12-for-16 from the free-throw line. Overall, Biola made a season-high 23 free-throws in this one.Medina was the teams' highest scorer in the second half, dropping in 13 points mostly on flashy cuts to the basket.

The Eagles shot 48 percent overall in this one as both teams finished with an equal 27 field goals made. Biola ended up with four scorers in double figures and came a couple rebounds shy of Milovich and Casey Cappo both getting double-doubles.

Milovich had 22 points, which led the team and is a new season-high for the fourth-year Eagle. Medina had 18, giving him his third double-digit effort in four games this season. The Eagles out-rebounded Cal Poly Pomona 37-34, but that's definitely an area to focus on this next week as the gap certainly could have been wider.

The win pushes Holmquist's squad to an even 2-2 overall this year. Meanwhile, Cal Poly Pomona falls to 0-3 as they continue a challenging preseason slate.

Up next for Biola is a post-Thanksgiving Saturday contest against CSU Dominguez Hills (2-1). That game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
