Cougars go the Distance

The men’s basketball team lost a hard fight against Azusa Pacific who ended up going the distance in a 87-69 win.

Azusa, Calif.--- The Biola Men's Basketball team put up a fight against Azusa Pacific but the Cougars managed to distance themselves in the second half, pulling off a 87-69 win against the visiting Eagles.

Azusa Pacific's win improves their record to 14-6 overall and 9-4 in the PacWest Conference, while Biola drops 12-7 and 7-5 in the PacWest. APU also chipped away at BU's 50-30 lead in the Cornerstone Cup standings.

Biola gave Azusa Pacific a hard fight in the first half where the score was tied seven times. Daniel Esparza was on fire for the Eagles, scoring 15 points. Erik Howlin was Biola's next highest scorer with nine points. 

Despite an admirable effort from Biola, Azusa Pacific was the team to lead 38-32 headed into the halftime break. 

Returning from halftime, the Cougars got straight to work where they made the first three baskets (42-32). Azusa Pacific continued to find and capitalize on scoring opportunities until they built up a 29-point lead. With nine minutes remaining in the game, Biola began cutting back Azusa Pacific's advantage. BU would get as close as 87-69 with Christian Estrada making the final basket of the game. 

APU was an offensive force, shooting 50 percent from the field with five players scoring in the double digits. The Cougars also made the most of Biola's mistakes, scoring 25 points off of BU's turnovers.

Biola's Esparza led his team and the court in scoring with 24 points. The Eagles also led in three-point scoring where they shot 45 percent. Nathan Medina was a perfect 2-for-2 and Esparza and Wright each scored three for Biola. 

The men's basketball team will head home and play next on Friday, Jan. 27 against Chaminade at 4 p.m.
