Defense Does It

The BU squad held the Vulcans to 54 points on their home court, ending the Eagles’ Hawaii trip with a victory.

HILO, Hawaii --- Three games in five days wrapped up with a tough matchup at the Hawaii Hilo Vulcans. Despite being ranked two spots below UHH (11-4, 7-3 PacWest) in the latest regional poll, Biola (12-6, 7-4 PacWest) came out on top on Wednesday night. The BU defense got the job done in the 61-54 triumph.

The key to victory for the Eagles was the team's defensive work against the No. 2 scoring offense in the PacWest. The Vulcans entered the contest, averaging 83.7 points per game but mustered just 54 against BU.

BU kept the hosting squad inefficient, holding the conference-leader for field goal percentage at 32.0 percent on Wednesday, which was well below their season average of 50.4 percent.

In the defensive effort, four different Eagles logged a block and three picked up a steal. Hunter Ruck led the way off the bench, nabbing three blocks to collect half of the team's total rejections.

Despite leading for over 75 percent of the game, the Eagles found themselves trailing in the waning minutes. UHH finally got hot on offense and put together a 16-3 run to take control near the five-minute mark in the second half.

The two teams traded blows and knotted up at 52 with 2:25 left in the contest. Daniel Esparza delivered on the next possession, drilling a three-pointer to give the Eagles the 55-52 advantage. Four solid defensive possessions followed for BU, helping an Alex Wright jumper create a two-score gap at 57-52 with 40 seconds on the clock. Four made free throws would seal the 61-54 win for the visiting Eagles.

Wright was the top scorer for BU on Wednesday, ending the night with 17 points on 8-15 shooting from the field. For the fifth-straight game, Wright logged every minute on the court with 40 minutes played in the win.

Esparza added 16 points from the guard position with a pair of treys. The sophomore reached double figures in scoring for the 16th time this year.

On the boards, Erik Howlin shined with 10 rebounds. The impressive total marked a personal-best for the sophomore.

Biola will be back in action next Wednesday when it takes on Azusa Pacific on the road at 7:30 pm.
