Game of Inches

The Eagles and Silverswords were tied through 40 minutes but Chaminade inched ahead in overtime.

HONOLULU, Hawaii --- Monday's contest saw an impressive comeback effort from the Eagles (11-6, 6-4 PacWest) in the second half. The team overcame a 12-point deficit to force overtime but ultimately the team fell short to Chaminade (10-9, 5-6 PacWest) on the road.

Offensively, the Eagles struggled to get into a groove. The team accumulated 25 points on 42.6 percent shooting from the field. BU also failed to find the bottom of the net on a three-pointer, missing the mark on all six attempts.

The defense kept the visitors in the ball game, holding the Silverswords to 33 points. CUH was also unable to eclipse 50.0 percent shooting, landing at 48.3 percent in the opening half.

The script flipped in the second half with the host squad stalling on offense and the Eagles making the climb back. The grind started at the 13 minute mark with the Silverswords leading by 12 at 48-36.

Through the final stretch, Biola got the job done. The team posted 23 points with five different scorers and three triples.

On the other side of the ball, BU held the Silverswords to five made baskets on 23 field goal attempts. The 21.7 field goal percentage and 8.3 three-point field goal percentage helped CUH to 11 points in the 13 minute span, allowing the Eagles to make their way to a tie game.

Casey Cappo made the first big bucket, tying the game at 57 with a stepback jumpshot. Chaminade responded with 48 seconds left in the contest to regain control. Just 18 seconds later, Alex Wright took his turn in the clutch. He delivered on a driving layup to knot the game at 59 and force a five-minute overtime period.

A pair of layups from Maximo Milovich put the Eagles in the driver's seat two minutes into overtime. The 63-62 advantage for BU was the team's first lead since the 12-minute mark in the first half.

Chaminade reclaimed the lead before the two teams went silent. For over a minute, neither team impacted the scoreboard as the Silverswords held a one-point advantage. As the final minute began to wane the Eagles tried to slow down the game with fouls. The Silverswords hit their free throws to close out the contest for a 72-68 final.

Daniel Esparza led the day with 21 points, five rebounds and three assists. Wright came through with 15 points, adding 13 in the second half alone.

Cappo tallied his first double-double as an Eagle on Monday. The sophomore reeled in 11 rebounds to go along with 13 points in the match.

Biola will look to get back on track on Wednesday at Hawaii Hilo at 9:30 pm PST.
