Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Dominguez Dazzles, Eagles Fall

Biola suffers a third loss in a row as Whitten Dominguez sets career-bests.

BELMONT, Calif. — Facing one of the most athletic teams in the PacWest Conference on Thursday night, Biola Men's Basketball struggled to keep up while on the road, falling to Academy of Art, 85-71.

ART U had five players reach double-digit scoring, using a balanced attack to overcome a Biola team that was more one-dimensional than usual on Thursday evening in Belmont.

Biola's big three all scored in single digits for just the second time in their three years as a trio, allowing Whitten Dominguez and Jesse Elrod to step up and pour in buckets. Despite 20+ from each of them, the Eagles still came a bit shy of the season sweep of ART U.

Dominguez was shooting lights out all night, going 10-for-13 from the field to set a new career-high for field goals made and field goals attempted while finishing one off his career-best in points. It was the first time this year and second time in his career that Dominguez led BU in scoring.

Elrod was second in scoring, finishing 7-for-17 and leading the team with four three-point makes. He had 20 points overall as he and Dominguez combined to account for 62 percent of Biola's points.

Biola led for much of the first 10 minutes of this one, but a late first-half surge spotted the hosts a large lead that would carry through the end of this one. The Eagles' early scoring stalled out at 25 points as a 12-2 ART U run in the final four minutes of the first half helped the hosts build as high as a 13-point lead shortly before halftime.

Just as it did at the outset of the game, Biola began hot in the second half. The Eagles used an eight point run powered by a Dominguez triple, Elrod three-point play and Rossow fastbreak bucket to get back within three with 17 minutes to play.

Unfortunately, that'd be just about as close as BU would get as ART U utilized strong rebounds and lots of Biola turnovers to slowly but surely build back to a sizable double-digit lead.

Another long scoreless stretch for BU was what did the Eagles in as Biola sat at 57 points for three minutes and allowed a seven-point lead to become a 17-point lead. The Eagles only had a chance to attempt two field goals during that stretch, turning the ball over three times.

Biola shot 50 percent from the floor, but the Eagles were haunted by 18 turnovers (a -10 differential) and 22 fouls, including a rare foul out from Michael Bagatourian and foul trouble for key players Alex Wright and Maximo Milovich.

The Eagles (19-7, 13-6 PacWest) will shake this one off quickly and finish off the regular season at Dominican (8-18, 4-14 PacWest) on Saturday. Biola needs a victory to lock in the No. 3 seed in next week's PacWest Conference tournament.
