Near Triple-Double Keys Big Win

Rossow nearly triple-doubles as Eagles lock up No. 3 seed.

February 26, 2022

Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Biola Men's Basketball booted its recent struggles on Saturday with one of its most complete performances of the 2021-22 season, scoring in bunches to set aside Dominican 100-75 and lock up the No. 3 seed in next week's PacWest Conference Tournament.

Biola had lost three-straight to nearly double its season total in the loss column over the last week-and-a-half and a large part of that was the inability to produce on the offensive end with as much regularity as much of the season.

That changed in a big way on Saturday as BU set a new conference season-high in scoring to dispatch of a fired up Dominican bunch that finishes its year just outside of conference tournament contention.

Five Eagles scored in double figures and came tantalizingly close to getting two men with double-doubles (and another on triple-double watch) in a dominant showing. Biola never trailed or even sat tied with Dominican throughout the run of play.

This was just the third time Biola's hit triple digits in a PacWest Conference game since the team's entry into the league in 2017-18. It's the first time since Feb. 22, 2020 and just the second time they've done it in a regulation 40-minute game.

The Eagles were 36-for-66 from the field to shoot around 55 percent, but the volume really came from 19 made free throws and a bunch of extra easy opportunities created by a +14 rebounding advantage in this game.

An early run from Dominican had them as close as two points at 20-18 with 30 minutes left to play, but Biola ended the first half on a huge scoring run to blow the game wide open. The Eagles scored 19 of the next 21 points over a seven-minute stretch to turn the moderate two-point advantage to a 39-20 lead at the final media timeout in the first half.

Chris Rossow led Biola's scoring with 27 points. He dropped in almost all of those from the floor, shooting a gnarly 11-of-17 from the field. He was the one on triple-double watch as the senior finished with seven rebounds and eight assists in another trademark performance.

Alex Wright did record a double-double, pulling down 11 defensive rebounds to go with 13 points for his third time this season finishing with 10+ in more than one category.

Maximo Milovich came one bounce shy of his second double-double of this year. The redshirt freshman finished with nine points to pair with his season-high 16 points. He was 6-for-10 as Biola's big men had easy access inside throughout the night.

Jesse Elrod was one of those notable efforts as he went 7-for-10 overall and canning three of his four three-point attempts. He finished with double figures for the third time in the last five games as he recorded the second-most points for BU (23).

Elrod went 6-for-7 at the line to make about one-third of Biola's total free throws. He did all of that in just 22 minutes on the hardwood.

Michael Bagatourian rounded out BU's five double-digit scorers with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting.

Biola limited Dominican to just 38 percent shooting and only five made threes in this one. Ball movement was the key to the fluidity on the Eagles' offensive end and the stagnation on Dominican's side. BU finished the game with 20 assists to the hosts just having 12.

Biola closes out its regular season 20-7 (14-6 PacWest) and places third to Azusa Pacific and Point Loma. The Eagles now seek a return to the PacWest Tournament Finals next week at the tournament hosted by Fresno Pacific. As the no. 3 seed, the Eagles will play in game one of the tournament at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday March 2.
