BU Takes Battle of Eagles

Biola made a late push to overthrow Concordia on Saturday night in a thrilling 90-86 victory.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Nothing seems to faze the Biola men's basketball squad (19-4, 13-3 PacWest), as the team tallied another come from behind victory on Saturday night. The Eagles erased a nine-point deficit to triumph over CUI (10-10, 7-7 PacWest), 90-86, to collect their third comeback win in the last four games. The win marked the eighth-straight for BU.

Saturday's game was a near replay of the two team's previous matchup on February 1. In that prior contest, BU trailed at the half and needed a 19-3 run with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game to come out on top.

Fast forward to Saturday and the BU Eagles once again found themselves with a deficit. The hosting CUI Eagles came to play in the opening half for a 41-36 advantage.

The largest lead of the second half came early for Concordia and Biola responded quickly. BU kept CUI scoreless for four minutes and tacked on nine points to bring the game even at 57. Despite the strong run, BU could not gain control and CUI continued to maintain a small edge.

With the clock ticking towards two minutes remaining, it was time for the Biola Eagles to make a final push and they did. A layup from Chris Rossow gave BU a boost with 2:07 left in the contest, bringin the game to 83-80 in favor of CUI. Two free throws from BU and a made bucket from CUI kept the difference the same, before a Whitten Dominguez three-pointer tied the game. With a minute remaining, Michael Bagatourian dished the ball to Dominguez, who sank the deep ball to knot the game at 85.

The pressure was too much for Concordia, as the host squad tallied back-to-back turnovers. Fouls and free throws followed, giving Biola a four-point lead with four made free throws. With less than 20 ticks left, CUI was unable to complete a final miracle. Concordia missed their last chance with a three-point attempt to tie with six seconds on the clock.

Rossow highlighted the second half surge with 19 points. The senior was unguardable with 31 points and six assists throughout Saturday's contest. Eight rebounds and four steals also came in from the point guard, who led the team or tied for the team lead in every category except three-pointers.

Free throws played a major role in Saturday's contest with both teams playing aggressively on defense. Biola turned 26 CUI fouls into 34 foul shots but converted at an inefficient rate of 64.7 percent.

Maximo Milovich thrived off the bench, collecting 15 points and eight boards in 24 minutes on the floor. Five Eagles tallied double-digits in the scoring column, including Rossow, Milovich, Jesse Elrod (13), Alex Wright (12) and Dominguez (10).

BU men's basketball will be back on its home court on Wednesday in a bout against Point Loma at 7:30 pm.
